Sensational! FRANK POPP is the first German artist to win the legendary British musician PAUL WELLER for a song collaboration. The extremely well-done track “Right Before My Eyes” combines Weller’s unique voice, lyrics, and guitar solo with the lush production and catchy songwriting that Frank Popp is known for.
The Frank Popp Ensemble, founded by Mr. Popp himself around 2000, began as a one-man concept, unashamedly recreating the sounds of Northern Soul and Funk from the late 60s, working in old school Hip Hop fashion, using vintage samples, re-structuring and combining them with beats and some minimal instrument parts. In 2001 Warner Brothers picked the track „High Voltage“ for the movie „Operation Swordfish“ with John Travolta, Halle Berry and Hugh Jackman. By this time Popp had written what should become a classic song „Hip Teens Don’t Wear Blue Jeans“ with vocals from Sam Leigh-Brown, followed a year later by the album debut “Ride On!”. „Hip Teens“ became part of a Coca-Cola advertising campaign and also reached the German Top 20.
Frank Popp has been a Paul Weller fan since the 80s. As a young teenager, his first songs by THE JAM fell into his hands (That’s Entertainment, Town Called Malice, Going Underground), shortly afterwards he danced wildly to STYLE COUNCIL’s “Shout To The Top” in Hilden’s small-town disco JWD or tried to impress the girls with “My Ever Changing Moods”. Things got a little more grown-up with Weller’s solo stuff like “Wild Wood”, the incredibly good “Wishing On A Star” cover version or the worldwide hit “You Do Something To Me”, which was the inspiration for this collaboration in Popp’s mind. “It is an incredible honor to be able to work with this icon of music history, with the ‘Modfather’,” explains Popp.
Fans of the old Weller albums will get their money’s worth here, but the song also has the potential to attract new listeners.
The song will be released on Noveber 21st, 2025 via Unique Records / Schubert Music Europe, distributed by Believe.
