Today marks the premiere of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera at the Grand Theatre – National Opera in Warsaw, Poland.
Film director Agnieszka Smoczynska makes her opera debut, taking the story of the former corsair and ruler of Genoa, Simon Boccanegra, into a futuristic tale of climatic world destruction.
In the production, the orchestra conducted by Fabio Bondi will also be supported by accompanying music composed by Schubert Music Publishing writer, Bartosz Schmidt, aka Baasch.
In this modern interpretation, the action is set in a post-apocalyptic world affected by climate catastrophe, where the sun plays the role of the Old Testament God bringing destruction. SmoczyĆska emphasises that the opera, full of melancholy, love and darkness, perfectly resonates with contemporary fears of the coming end of a world that can still be saved.
Further performances are scheduled for 16, 19, 21 and 23 February 2025.
