The Frank Popp Ensemble is the brainchild of German producer and designer Frank Popp, founded around 2000. What started as a one-man project recreating the sounds of northern soul and late ’60s funk evolved into a dynamic musical collective blending vintage grooves with modern flair. Popp first gained attention with the track “High Voltage”, featured in the 2001 film Swordfish, followed by the hit “Hip Teens Don’t Wear Blue Jeans”, which broke into the German Top 20 and became part of a Coca-Cola campaign.
After the acclaimed albums Ride On! and Touch and Go, Popp continued producing, designing, and curating events in Berlin. In 2023, he relaunched The Frank Popp Ensemble with the critically praised album Shifting, featuring guest artists like Jesper Munk, Sam Leigh-Brown, and Lucy Kruger. The 2024 follow-up Waves expanded the sonic palette with contributions from J Mahon, Nicke Andersson, Emma Noble, and more, cementing Popp’s status as a master of retro-inspired modern pop.
